ROCK CONCERT

††† Today is the day the music will start!

†††††††† The crew will be rocking and rolling.

†††††††† Carrying the tunes from aft to foward [sic]

†††††††† The D.J. will add up the polling.

†††††††† Rock hits will fly from dusk to dawn,

†††††††† It'll attract all kinds of sorters.

†††††††† The man at the head will probably be Lawn,

†††††††† Yesterday he missed morning quarters!

†††††††† The concert will be the biggest one yet,

†††††††† We'll try very hard for our fans.

†††††††† Some of us (bow your head), will be drenching in

††††††††††††† sweat,

†††††††† And have knicks [sic] and cuts on our hands.

†††††††† Look at the hard work we'll do,

†††††††† Great memories will go down in our past!

†††††††† Good luck men you'll need it too!

†††††††† A lot of you probably won't last.

Note:A portion of the ship's crew slept aboard every night, in bunks set up in the main hold.Prior to the above date, some unknown individuals had persisted in dumping refuse over the ballast aft of the sleeping area. The "rock concert" of the title refers to the all hands work detail organized by Senior Chief Boatswain's Mate Walter R. Gross to remove all ballast rocks, clean them and the bilges, and restow them. The "phantom dumpers" did not return.
